S401

S401 Multi db VCA/Attenuator

Product Description

(This module is included in the System B)

The S401 is combines both linear voltage controlled amplification and attenuation in a small module. There are two VCAs that share one CV input patch point. The amount of gain/loss at 1V CV input can be chosen using the multi db knob. There are 5 selections: -12db, -6db, 0db, +6db and +12db. It can also be used to amplify and attenuate control voltages/low rates. The 5 selections in this case will be equivalent to divisions and multiplications of /4, /2, x1, x2, x4 respectively, again these are all when 1V is preset at the CV in. Lower or higher CV will obviously give proportionally lower or higher gain/loss.

As in most amplifying SoloRack modules. The S401 clips at +12dbFS. A clipping LED is provided at both VCAs. Notice that clipping can cause distortion and in the worst case, audible aliasing. It is best practice to patch and tune things in a none clipping manner. Unless of-course you really like the clipping effects and artifacts. To prevent clipping, simply lower the multi db knob selection to an acceptable level. If you can’t get enough volume/gain without causing the VCA to clip. Then leave it low and amplify the audio latter after the VCA. For example at the output module using the SA02 or SA05.
