S612

S612 Octet Chorus

Product Description

(This module is included in the System B)

The The S612 is a massive 8 delay line chorus with what we call an unlinked depth and rate feature.
Chorus effects are constructed using small internal delay lines. Usually 2 or 4 lines are used. The maximum we’ve seen is 6 in a eurorack module. The S612 contains 8 delay lines!!. The number of lines can be chosen through a selector knob. You can even have an odd number of lines which is unusual. Feedback can be used to thicken the effect further. Wild effects can be reached with extreme settings. Just beware of the CPU usage as you increase the number of lines, it can consume a considerable amount.

Manual and voltage control of both the rate and depth. The S612 can all either act as mono or full stereo (when both Left and Right inputs are patched). The sterio depth can be either manually dialed or voltage controlled. A dry/wet knob is also provided.

Another feature of the S612 is that the depth and rate are unlinked. This means that increasing/decreasing the rate does NOT indirectly affect the percieved depth. This is a problem in most other choruses when changing the rate, you have to also manually change the depth to keep it the same. We’ve figured out a way to fix that.

Like most SoloRack modules that can amplify the input, this module clips at +12dbFS. A clipping LED is provided. Notice that clipping can cause distortion and in the worst case, aliasing. It is best practice to patch and tune things in a none clipping manner. Unless of-course you really like the clipping effects and artifacts, which is possible in some situation. To prevent clipping, lower the input levels. If you can’t get enough volume/gain without causing the module to clip. Then leave it low (without clipping) then amplify the audio latter after the module. For example at the output module using the SA02 or SA05.

Further Insight:

Roland(TM)/Boss(TM) first introduced the chorus effect in the CE-1 pedal and the main goal was to simulate multiple performers performing the same piece. The subtle timing and pitch differences between the performers creates a huge ensemble effect that is pleasing and provides a feeling of space.
