SD05

SD05 MIDI Poly Chainer

Product Description

(This module is included in the System B)

There are two polyphonic systems in SoloRack. “Automatic” and “Manual”. The SD05 module is essential for both systems. Without it, polyphony (using MIDI) will not work. For automatic, please read the tutorial here

The purpose of SD05 is to provide polyphonic features by dynamically routing MIDI key note messages to 1 of 8 different MIDI outputs. Each MIDI output can then be connected to a separate voice (Typically to the SD02). A maximum of 8 voice polyphony can be achieved in the manual system. (The maximum is 16 when using the automatic system). The MIDI channel that the module listens to can be set with the digital LED. When set to “AL”, all channels will be listened too.

The SD05 supports both polyphonic aftertouch and channel aftertouch. Polyphonic aftertouch messages are routed to the correct MIDI port while notes are being held. Channel aftertouch is routed to all MIDI ports. CC messages are routed to all ports.

The SD05 also supports MPE. Click the down arrow button until the display reaches “LO” mode. Click it once again and it will show “UP” mode. These two modes are the two MPE modes available. Here is a brief explanation of how they work.

Unlike standard MIDI which applies CC messages to all notes held. MPE can associate a CC message with each note separately. It does this by dynamically/temporarily assigning each note pressed to a specific MIDI channel. All CC messages that follow for that note will be assigned to that channel. Obviously the hardware controller will have to support this. Still, MPE can send CC messages that are meant for all notes. It does this by using a master channel. There are only two possible master channels, 1 or 16. The “LO” mode in the SD05 assumes master channel 1, and “UP” mode assumes master channel 16.

In MPE terminology, you will see “Lower Zone” (master channel 1) and “Upper Zone” (master channel 16). So you might want to take note of that when configuring your hardware controller.
